Rectangle Recognition

The patterns are a great way to apply the built-in geometric proportions of the Master Square to detect any shot label, but there are other Angle Detective methods that also allow us to detect the shot labels. The Theory section showed us that every shot angle or label resides within its own unique shot rectangle. If we can somehow recognize the unique rectangle of a given shot setup, the rectangle’s label would then instantly tell us the aim for that shot.

What and where is the shot rectangle?

From Position 1, the object ball and the cue ball mark two opposite corners of the shot rectangle and therefore determine its proportions.

From Position 2, the pocket center and object ball’s aim (or more accurately the ghost ball center) mark two opposite corners of the shot rectangle and therefore determine its proportions.

The more we practice the system, the better acquainted we become with the proportions of shot rectangles, and we can even begin recognizing them at a glance. For practicing recognition of the main reference rectangles, I have provided a printout of these rectangles in the Angle Detective zipped downloadable folder.

Although it is a very useful skill to be able to recognize rectangles at a glance, it is not a necessary one. There are Angle Detective methods besides instant recognition or Master Square pattern sequences that reveal the rectangle and label of the shot you are facing.
